Gold Beer Mug

What Japanese goldsmith Ginza Tanaka decided to do with 850 grams of gold was to craft a beer mug. Apparently, consuming the beverage from a golden mug adds to the pleasure of beer drinking. Drinking beer from a glass the cost of a luxury car is the ultimate cool experience, so states the designer. Ginza is also known for other gold workings, namely the golden threaded bikinis, X-mas statuettes and other luxurious golden miscellanea. Gold wine glasses are also available at $30/gram. The solid gold beer mug’s ticket price: $50,000.

Ken Courtney, aka. Ju$t Another Rich Kid, known for his previous designs (the gold plated Nike high tops pendant, and the “I Fucked Paris Hilton” tees) was commissioned by Citizen: Citizen along w/ Tobias Wong to express the American excessive lifestyle. The result is blatant irony. The original props were worthless plastic, now the gold pays hommage to the drug world’s bling as the gold and silver plated coke spoons become a collector’s must-have. In the 80’s McD’s discontinued the plastic coffee stirrer as it came up in many drug trials as exhibits in evidence. It’s only obvious that McDonald’s hoped to have the spoon’s reincarnation taken off the market. Their attempt was unsuccessful, launched last week in San Francisco, the Coke Spoon # 2 series is available in sets of 5 in both silver and gold plate. Coke Spoon #1 the Bic pen cap, didn’t bring as much controversy to the table.
“It is unfortunate, but ultimately shows the inherent power of objects and their multiple meanings… I would think that as a collectors item it has just become an even greater prize. I would imagine the rest of the [Indulgence] range is also going to go up in value” said Philip Wood, Director of CITIZEN:Citizen
